Top Mix or not to Mix That Is the Question

What do you think about the migration of minority groups to new societies?
If you were forced to group people into different races what would be the basis? If you were to design a society, would you allow for integration of several races or would this be a one race society, how would you identify people of other races? If people of other races are in your society would all be equal, what would be your race policy? Spencer believes that society can benefit from the mixing of races, Do you agree? Why or why not?

It is something that is unavoidable, given the fact that developed nations such as Canada and the USA are actually trying to fill population gaps in their societies. With the amount of migration taking place presently, governments everywhere will have enact new legislation to facilitate the planned migration of ethnic groups.

Race is at least as much a social construction as a biological reality.
It is almost impossible to determine peoples race by the texture of their hair or the color of their skin.

If you were to design a society, would you allow for integration of several races or would this be a one-race society, how would you identify people of other races?
I will allow for integration. There is no pure race.

If people of other races were in your society would all be equal, what would be your race policy?
Equality could be achieved when we all learn to treat each person with respect. When we realize that we all came from the same fore-parents and we have one creator we may see a change in people’s opinion of each other.

Spencer believes that society can benefit from the mixing of races, Do you agree? Yes

The coming together of the races will bring benefits to all societies.

  2. The migration of minority groups to a new society is not a big thing for me.Every one is built with a survival mode, and if it means re-locating for the chance of a "better life" for ourselves and our family, every one of us will do it.
If I am forced to group people into different races, the basis would be on attitudes.Race cannot be determined by simply looking at someone.
However,my designer society would be an integrated society, variety of people is much more appealing to my eyes. All people in my society would be equal and there would be no need for a race policy. I am in total agreement with Spencer on society benefitting from the mixing of races because every race can boast of its prowess in different fields, true or not I cannot say. If this is true however, just imagine the results of mixed races. The only problem I foresee is some adults who are set in their ways transmitting racial ideologies to the children. Therefore, I would have to follow in God's footsteps and not allow people who are set in their ways into my society.

  3. Migration of minority groups to new societies depends on where encourages exploitation from the richer groups e.g. the small islanders going to Europe, especially not having proper status are being 'abused'and taken advantage of. The basis of this group will be equality with Godly standards, even though it was impossible to acquire in our present society, because of corruption and mindsets. But with new experiences and evidence of us being the same regardless of our ethnicity, this will be established. The allowances for integration will be minimal. Two races will experience this benefit, they are: African and Indian/ Caucasian. This is to afford the variety of beauty that God had in his master plan (hybrids that we refer to as douglas or half whites). If it happens that other races are there the policies remain the same, none is above the other. that is to inculcate the habitat. I share similar sentiments with Spencer, therefore i agree.

  4. I believe that if minority groups wishes to move to another society, they should be allowed to do so, I would justify such action if their present society does not provide the basics for living. (Food, shelter, work, education and health).
I would group people into different races base on their needs.
If I am to design a society I would allow integration since I believe that “no man is an island and iron sharpens iron”, we learn from interacting with others of different society, culture, race and the list goes on…
If other people were to be in my society, yes it will be equal for all, because each individual will have equal rights, opportunities, and the justice system will fit all, indeed I agree with Spencer, I see people as human beings, created by one God.

  5. The difiniton of poverty is a matter of debate. So we will all have our belief of what is poverty. The poor in class-stratified capitalist societies lack effective participation and integration within the large society, Society have created such stigma and the poor develop feelings of marginality, helplessness, dependence, and inferiority, which allegedly breed weak ego structures which is passed down to generations

  6. Sir, I have to agree with Albert that migration of minority groups to new societies is something that is unavoidable. To some people, Trinidad is little America, a place where they can come and make a living, which they believe cannot be achieve in their own country. On the other hand, Trinibagoians run to America hoping to make a better life for themselves. This is just an example of what happen throughout the world.

Since I have genetic ties with the Indian race and the French race flowing in my blood stream every one will be in one group in my society.

Unlike Bridget I will allow total integration in my society because even a dog has a friend. Any way God CREATED EVERY ONE IN HIS OWN IMAGE AND LIKENESS. My society would have equal opportunities for all, what one do with it is up to them. Therefor, I must say I do agree with Spencer, a mix race is the way to go.

  7. Like Patricia I come from a mixed family background and as a result it is hard for me to not accept the idea of mixing the races because had it not been for that I would be here today. I believe that the mixing of the races is an expression of true love in society in that it shows that no matter where a person comes from that unconditional love will exist and that is the kind of appreciation we should give to one another because that is what God expects from us. It also expresses to some extent the tolerance that is required when we refer to our nation's watch words "discipline, production and TOLERANCE".

  8. I believe that because created all men equal, then so should I, growing up as a child I have always heard the statement I am better than no one, and no one is better than me, so why should I shun or prevent someone from having certain privileges based on the fact that the may look different to me, when all said and done the same red blood passes through our veins. Yes, there are cases where prevention is better than cure but if we really take the time to analise the circumstances and there is no real detriment then there should not be a problem in mixing the races. Indeed equal opportunity is best when integration occurs.

  9. Minority groups are the backbone of many powerful societies. eg the good ole USA These powerful and well established societies which seem to forget that it was the minority which build the country and made it into what it is today, had it not been for the minority.
The basis for me to group people into different races would perhaps be based on their moral code of conduct, other than that I believe in ONE race the HUMAN race and in the mixing of the races. I believe that no group is really pure especially in our society of Trinidad and Tobago

  10. Migration of minority groups into new societies can be an asset or a drain depending on the abilities, skills and training of the individuals. An integrated society of different races contribute to the building process of the society. It brings with it cultures, methods and religions that will benefit each other in the building process. People from other races can be identified mostly by their structural built, skin pigmentation and hair texture. It is unrealistic for each individual to be equal, but they can play their role based on ability. I definitely agree with Spencer's view that the mixing of races can be beneficial to society.

  11. trinidad and tobago is a multicultural society. people with different customs, norms and values dwell among each other. it is all about appreciating and accepting others. i have no problem with minority groups migrating to new societies. these individuals are able to share their customs and traditions and to some extent they will be able to add to the cultural diversity by mixing the races.

  12. Q. If people of other races are in your society would all be equal, what would be your race policy?
Firstly, if I were to design a society based on race, it would be much like Trinidad and Tobago in terms of the diversity in races that exist among us here. All races within my society would be equal. Discrimination would not be accepted also within my society. Members of various races will be afforded the same opportunities as each other. They will be allowed to interact an integrate any way they please once it is not detrimental to any race.

  14. Yes I agree with Spencer’s views, here’s why. I believe that the mixing of races in any society, enriches that society, immigrant adds value based on the positives by ways of culture and creativity that they bring towards integration in their new found home.

However equal opportunities in social services in my view cannot be equal if citizens of their own country by a significant percentage needs are not met, with this consideration immigrants would have to work a little harder to achieve their needs.

The basics such as food, clothing and opportunities for employment, training and educational advancement would be afforded to them, which in the long run would reap the rewards of their efforts, nothing good comes easy. There must be a measure of control for fear that free and equal opportunities can be taken advantage and so because of this, there must be the implementation of state regulations and policies that should used as a tool to guide this serves in two fold, those on the distribution end ( the national )and the awareness of what is afforded to them such as goods, services and opportunities (the immigrants).

A: However, as much as this may be a negetive thing it can also be benificial to the society. This can prmote a stronger labour force considering the skills and abilities of the indiviuals and develop the society holistically.

  18. What do you think about the migration of minority groups to new societies?
I agree with migration of minority groups to other societies as a matter of fact I agree with migration in general. There are many different countries in the world and just as the large societies were able to travel all over, live anywhere, and own anything in other lands, why should it be right for them and not for others? These first world societies gained their wealth off the so called third world societies. They exploited them, robbed their wealth and interrupted their development. Now when the people of these poorer countries want to visit and live in other lands they want to restrict them and put them through obstacles just to get a chance to visit the lands.

I do not think there can ever be a one race society. This would be boring. So my society would have different races. Races would not feel as though they are being allowed to integrate, people would integrate if they want to, they have freewill. The idea in my society will be to treat people as people. There would be one race that is human race, so that section would be left off application and other forms. This is just another of discrimination some people who have this wild idea that they should categorize people as they do with animals or objects. People are people and such be treated as people.

  20. If people of other races are in your society would all be equal what would be your race policy? Spencer believes that society can benefit from mixing of races? Do you agree? Why or why not?
I my society all people would be equal therefore I would not need a race policy. I agree with Spencer I think societies can and have benefitted from mixing of races. When you look at the society it is not people’s races that determine what they do. I think it is the way they are cultured. If one society is able to sell the vision of that society say for example; we are a fruit eating society. If all the members of that society is taught that and knows that and it is norm and law the members of the society would live to maintain that stand. If people deviate from that then they will be punished according to the law. It would not be because this person or this race is does not like fruit so all the members of the race will break the law. It will be a people thing and one or two persons way rebel against the norm.

  21. i like spencer agree that society can benifit from the mixing of races, from a theological stand point it think that God intended for us to all live as one and that to seperate man because of some out word simularity is simular to illtreating some one for the same reason. i think that a society where all groups are present forms grounds for a very interesting way of life and alot to look forward for.

  22. I do not see a problem with the migration of minority groups to new societies, once they participate. Race is not a basis that you should group people, but if I am forced to I was try to group them according to their culture and may be by the positions that they hold in society. When I look at a person I do not see race, but I see another human being like myself, so this is how I would identify them as “humans”. In the bible states that all men are created equal, Jesus does not see race, He counts all of us as His sons and daughters, so why should we? I also believe that the society can benefit from the mixing of races, because different races means different cultures and many societies stand to learn and excel from these views.

  23. Question: If people of other races are in your society would all be equal, what would be your race policy?

My grouping or race policy would be ethnic, the same as we have in the world today but I would place all people as equal. I would remove the false notions of one race better than the other. I do not believe that man has the ability to lessen another's race because of his peculiar internal reasons or biases.

  24. A society with all the people of the same race, type and group is possible, but will lack true creativity. The true creativity that only appears with diversity of types. I agree with Spencer. Each race has a particular background, history and culture(food, transport, dress, dialect language) that it brings with it. The beautiful blend of a multicultural society like Trinidad would never be realized in isolation. Inclusion of societies breeds true beauty.

  25. it's necessary to divide persons based on physical features. I remember reading about a student who did a presentation talking about the whole issue of minority. He made a valid point. The student stated that they were moved from their country to work in developed countries which caused the exploitation of their own homeland. I can see his position. We need to be aware that classification based on skin colour is a strategy to make citizens relinquish their power to another. It's a divide and conquer approach.

  26. I agree with with the migration of minority groups to the extent that these groups are willing to adapt to the values and norms of the wider society which they are going to. In cases of war or disaster, this may not be a considerable factor, and maybe in such instances more support is needed to scaffold these people to a place where they make tangible contributions to the society at best, and do not become a burden to the state at least. I am a counsellor at heart, so I will always lean toward the understanding of the need for support. If we look at the business world for example, when you hire a new employee, there is a certain amount of mentoring, encouragement, supervision, feedback incentives, warnings... that are employed to shape this person, giving them the best chance at adapting to this new environment. No less should be expected and invested into minority immigrants.

  27. Since there is no definitive way to arrive at a person's race, this would not be an issue in designing my society. Having had the benefit of growing up in a multicultural society, and having a mixed heritage and parents who simply valued people equally, this does not stand out an a major issue for me. I firmly believe that "people are people" and that means that in every ethnicity, in every class, religion... in every way that we can find to categorize people, there will be honest people, genuine people, scamps, tricksters and the list goes on. They way people are socialized may increase the likelihood of a certain trait being more prevalent in certain groups but again, each situation should be handled individually. The overlying guide for me is that we are all different, and equally valuable.

I'm inclined to agree somewhat with Michael E Brown in explaining the various causes for conflict namely systematic (governments lack of foresight and action to anticipate conflict between two opposing ethnic groups and control/prevent it), domestic(the perceived inability of the state to protect different groups) and perpetual(their own perceptions of each other). In essence, ethnic groups are reacting to tangible and deep seated concerns, they feel vulnerable and are operating based on possible ignorance. All these elements are within the government's ability to manage. One way we have been able to unite here in Trinidad is by exposing each other to differing cultures, taking the bite out of the ignorance that breeds hostility.

  28. If a society has only one race, racism will end but by having a mix of races it would have a mix of culture, therefore creating a more diverse society, which would be good. Each race has a function in my opinion. We all have different strengths and weaknesses.
